We&#8217;ve compiled a glossary with a wide range of words and expressions commonly used in masonry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list CheckCrl\">\n<li><strong>Air-barrier membrane:<\/strong> Layer of material used to prevent unwanted air infiltration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Angle irons:<\/strong> L-shaped metal profiles used to reinforce wall corners or support loads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Brick:<\/strong> Rectangular building units made from fired clay or concrete, used for wall construction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/restaure-action.com\/en\/masonry-and-bricklaying-in-montreal\/frost-boil-repair-in-montreal\/\"><strong>Bulging wall:<\/strong><\/a> A protuberance that usually develops on a brick or stone wall when these elements begin to detach from the main structure. This deformation can be caused by a variety of factors, such as weakened anchors, construction errors or humidity problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Caulking:<\/strong> Process of sealing joints or cracks to prevent water or air infiltration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cement :<\/strong> Fine powder used as the main ingredient in the manufacture of concrete and mortar.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Concrete block:<\/strong> Prefabricated concrete building unit, often used for wall construction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Concrete:<\/strong> Building material composed of cement, sand, gravel and water, used to form structural elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Crack:<\/strong> Split or break in a building material, often due to movement or stress.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Efflorescence:<\/strong> Deposits of white mineral salts that form on the surface of building materials, often caused by humidity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fieldstone<\/strong>: A type of stone used for construction that comes from fields or quarries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Foundations:<\/strong> Masonry elements that support and stabilize a structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/restaure-action.com\/en\/masonry-and-bricklaying-in-montreal\/in-wall-flashing-in-montreal\/\"><strong>In-wall flashing:<\/strong><\/a> Waterproof material used to seal joints around roof openings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Joint reinforcement:<\/strong> Wire mesh or fibers used to reinforce mortar joints between bricks or blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lime:<\/strong> Binding material used in mortar to improve plasticity and strength.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lintels:<\/strong> Horizontal pieces placed above an opening to support the load above.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Masonry shear:<\/strong> Force acting perpendicular to masonry joints, often due to lateral loads.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mortar joint:<\/strong> Space filled with mortar between bricks or masonry blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mortar:<\/strong> Mixture of cement, sand, water and sometimes lime used to bond masonry units.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Natural stone<\/strong>: Stone extracted from quarries and used for construction because of its durability and aesthetics (granite, sandstone, marble, etc.).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/restaure-action.com\/en\/masonry-and-bricklaying-in-montreal\/parging-work-in-montreal\/\"><strong>Parging:<\/strong><\/a> Textured finishing coat applied to the exterior surface of walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Re-anchoring:<\/strong> Process of reinforcing existing support anchors to stabilize masonry.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Refection:<\/strong> Process of repairing, renovating or rebuilding a masonry structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reinforcing iron:<\/strong> Steel bar used to reinforce reinforced concrete structures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/restaure-action.com\/en\/masonry-and-bricklaying-in-montreal\/masonry-repointing-of-all-types\/\"><strong>Repointing:<\/strong><\/a> The process of filling or repairing mortar joints between bricks or masonry blocks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Saint-Marc limestone: <\/strong>Type of limestone used as a building material, originating from the Saint-Marc quarry in the Quebec City area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Siding :<\/strong> The visible outer layer of a wall or structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sills: <\/strong>Wall sections above an opening such as a window or door.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Supporting anchors:<\/strong> Devices used to stabilize and reinforce foundations or masonry walls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Water-barrier membrane:<\/strong> Layer of material used to prevent water infiltration into the construction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waterproofing membrane:<\/strong> Layer of impermeable material applied to prevent water infiltration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Waterproofing:<\/strong> Ability of a material or system to prevent water or air penetration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Weep holes:<\/strong> Masonry elements used to allow rainwater to drain away from the wall.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading Line\">About Restaure-Action<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Composed of qualified professionals dedicated to specialized masonry work, our team has a combined experience of over 60 years.
